Books+CDs, No pronunciation scores, Cheap, ★★★
Brief audio CDs of English explanations alternating with the target language are included in 14 of the 30 Berlitz phrasebooks and in most of the language courses ($10-$40), a total of 23 languages. Amazon reviewers say these are decent introductions, and you can freely read course scripts before you buy. However there are few repetitions and no slowing down. You can get more repetitions by putting each track of the audio CD on "repeat." (Click for Arguelles' review, and follow-up which also covers older versions.)
Berlitz online courses cost more and are reviewed elsewhere.
Berlitz has "Interactive" CDROM software ($10-20, no expiration, though eventually it will be incompatible with future operating systems, as you upgrade your computer) for Arabic, Mandarin, French, German, Italian and Japanese. The rare Amazon reviewers say it does not work well.
