Review of Dunwoody Newspaper Readers and Grammars
Books+cassettes, No pronunciation scores, Cheap, Intermediate
They publish excerpts of newspaper writing in 60 less common languages ($40-80), and sometimes fiction. For each reading they include definitions of the vocabulary and translations to English. For languages where it is hard to find other courses, they also have grammar outlines.

This is a very useful way to learn words appropriate for keeping up with the news, though it would be a hard, sudden immersion for beginners. They have audio in most languages ($10-50), so if you have no other course in the language you can study pronunciation here, in order to talk, or to hear radio news.
